Learn and Serve America Youth Engagement Zones FY 2011

The Learn and Serve America Youth Engagement Zones are designed to improve academic engagement - including student attendance and behavior - and academic achievement, high school graduation rates, and college-going rates by:

1. Demonstrating the relevance of academic coursework and the value of civic engagement through service-learning;
2. Connecting youth with citizens from diverse communities, backgrounds, and perspectives, providing them with expanded opportunities to serve; and
3. Building enduring capacity within communities to use service as a solution to address pressing challenges.

These grants will provide support for "eligible partnerships" to develop coordinated school- or community-based service-learning opportunities for secondary school students. All partnerships must include, at a minimum, at least one local education agency, one community college, and one community-based entity.

Funding Available

Subject to the availability of appropriations for fiscal year 2011, CNCS anticipates the availability of approximately $5.7 million for new Youth Engagement Zones grants. CNCS anticipates making an estimated 5 to 7 grant awards that will range from approximately $700,000 to $1,500,000 to support three years of operations.

Dept. of Labor Grant Announcement: Civic Justice Corps

The U.S. Department of Labor announces the availability of approximately $20 million in funds for Civic Justice Corps grants. Projects funded through these grants will help juvenile offenders gain valuable jobs skills, while demonstrating accountability for their actions through community service projects.

Awarded through a competitive process, these grants will prepare participants for employment and reduce recidivism. This will be accomplished through on-the-job training, job placement, subsidized jobs, and service projects that allow young offenders to take a positive role in their communities. Work experience, other vocational training, and academic interventions will enable participants to improve their skills and enhance their future educational and career opportunities.

The Department expects to award a minimum of 13 grants through this funding opportunity. Civic Justice Corps project funded grants will be expected to develop partnerships with a range of entities, including Social service agencies to provide referrals for supportive services that program participants may need.

Learn and Serve America School-Based Indian Tribes and U.S. Territories FY 2011

The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) announced a funding opportunity to accelerate the success of service-learning programs in federally-recognized Indian Tribes and U.S. Territories. Anticipating approximately $650,000 in new funding, CNCS expects to award three to four new grants under its Learn and Serve America program to enhance and expand existing service-learning programs, and develop new service-learning opportunities in tribal communities.

The grants will provide funding for one to three years to schools that are challenged to meet education standards. Specifically, the grants will support culturally-relevant programs that help youth in under-resourced communities achieve in school and graduate prepared for college, the work force, and life. These grants underscore the agency’s commitment to expanding opportunities among Indian Tribes and U.S. Territories to use service as a tool to build stronger communities.

Funding for this grant competition is contingent on the enactment of the Fiscal Year 2011 budget for CNCS.

Environmental Justice Small Grants Program

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now accepting grant applications for $1.2 million in funding to support projects designed to research, educate, empower and enable communities to understand and address local environmental and public health issues.

Environmental Justice Small Grants funding is available for two categories of projects:

40 grants of up to $25,000 each—to support projects that address a community’s local environmental issues through collaborative partnerships, and;
4 grants of up to $50,000 each—to support research on the environmental and human health impacts of exposure to multiple sources of pollution in communities.

Since its inception in 1994, the Environmental Justice Small Grants Program has awarded more than $21 million in funding to 1,200 community-based organizations, and local and tribal organizations working with communities facing environmental justice issues.

The Environmental Justice Small Grants Program, supports and empowers communities working on solutions to local environmental and public health issues. The program assists recipients in building collaborative partnerships to help them understand and address environmental and public health issues in their communities. Successful collaborative partnerships involve not only well-designed strategic plans to build, maintain and sustain the partnerships, but also working towards addressing the local environmental and public health issues.

Do Something Awards 2011

Since 1996, DoSomething.org has honored the nation’s best young world-changers, 25 and under. Do Something Award nominees and winners represent the pivotal "do-ers" in their field, cause, or issue. In 2011 the five nominees will be rewarded with a community grant, media coverage and continued support from DoSomething.org. The grand prize winner will receive $100,000 during the live broadcast.

Do Something Award applications are reviewed and judged by the Do Something Award Academy (comprised of former winners) and Do Something Awards team (comprised of Do Something staff) who read through every application and select finalists. The Do Something Award finalists are flown to New York City, where representatives from the Do Something Award Selection Committee (comprised of key not-for-profit and corporate professionals) and the Academy interview the finalists face-to-face. The finalists are narrowed down to five Do Something Award nominees who will be honored in late August and receive a minimum of $10,000 in community grants and scholarships. Of those five winners, one will be selected as the grand prize Do Something Award winner and receive a total of $100,000 in community grants.

Applicants must be 25 or younger (born on or after 9/1/85) and be a US or Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

The Do Something Award community grant money is paid directly to the nominee's organization or the not-for-profit of the nominee’s choice. All winners have the option of receiving $5,000 of the total money awarded in the form of an educational scholarship.

State Farm California Environmental Grant Program

State Farm California will be awarding five $5,000 grants to California public high schools or non-profit organizations whose work directly benefits California public high schools. From December 1, 2010 to January 14, 2011, submit the grant application form to tell us about an environmental program that needs funding at your local high school.

Programs applying for grant funding must meet the following requirements:

Applications will be accepted from California public high schools (or non-profit organizations whose work directly benefits public high schools)
Programs must address an environmental initiative within one of the following categories: driving – minimizing your carbon footprint; recycling – home or school; promoting healthy lifestyles; community outreach
Programs must be supported by a teacher or administrator of the high school where the grant is being funded
Projects should include intentional ties to classroom academics while addressing green issues

Eisner Prize for Excellence in Intergenerational Work

The Eisner Foundation has announced the launch of the inaugural Eisner Prize and is currently soliciting nominations of individuals or non-profit organizations. AmeriCorps State and National

CNCS is looking for high-impact organizations across America to submit their strongest applications for how to use AmeriCorps members to address pressing social problems. If the President's fiscal year 2011 budget request is fully funded, the agency anticipates approximately $311 million to be available for new, recompeting, and continuation grants in all of the AmeriCorps State and National grant categories, and $1 million for AmeriCorps planning grants. This funding will make a focused investment in the six national issue priorities identified in the Serve America Act of improving education, energy conservation, the health of all Americans, and economic opportunity for economically vulnerable individuals; increasing service by and for veterans; and providing disaster services. Lexus/Scholastic Eco Challenge

The Lexus Eco Challenge is a life-changing opportunity for teens across the nation to make a difference in the environmental health of our planet, one community at a time. The program is designed to inspire and empower middle and high school students to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. The Challenge is open to students in grades 6-12 who are registered, and enrolled a public or accredited private school or home-schooled, and who are legal residents of the United States or the District of Columbia. Captain Planet Foundation Grants

The mission of the Captain Planet Foundation is to fund and support hands-on, environmental projects for children and youths. The Foundation is interested in funding innovative programs that empower children and youth to work towards solving environmental problems in their neighborhoods and communities. All funded projects must involve young people ages 6-18 (elementary through high school). Nonprofit organizations and public schools worldwide are eligible to apply for grants of $250 to $2,500. In order to be considered for funding, proposals must:

* Promote understanding of environmental issues
* Focus on hands-on involvement
* Involve children and young adults 6-18 (elementary through high school)
* Promote interaction and cooperation within the group

Special Olympics Get Into It Grants

Special Olympics is partnering with Youth Service America to offer Get Into It grants that bring together students of all abilities to fight childhood obesity in their schools and communities. The program awards grants of $500 or $1,000 to help youth create and implement service-learning programs to fight childhood obesity. The application must be completed by a teacher and a unified pair of students (one with and one without an intellectual disability). NEA Youth Leaders for Literacy

Youth Leaders for Literacy will award 30 young people from across the U.S. each with $500 grants. Successful projects will be youth-led and address an established literacy need in the applicant's school or community. The projects will launch on NEA’s Read Across America Day on March 2nd and culminate on Global Youth Service Day, April 15-17.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia are eligible to apply. Youth ages 5-25 are welcome to apply along with an adult ally (an adult ally is a non-controlling mentor who offers support and guidance in the fulfillment of the service project).

State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grant

State Farm has teamed up with Youth Service America to offer grants of up to $1,000 for youth-led service-learning initiatives in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick. Eligible programs will engage youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that promotes student learning, academic achievement, workplace readiness, and healthy communities.

State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants encourage semester-long projects (following YSA's Semester of Service framework) that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

Applications must be submitted by midnight, November 9, 2010

Eligible candidates include teachers, service-learning coordinators and students in a public school, or staff and youth in a community-based organization working with a public school.

Learn and Serve Texas Grant

Service Learning Texas is able to offer another round of funding for the Learn and Serve Texas Grant. This grant competition is open to public school districts, open enrollment charter schools, and shared services arrangements (SSAs) of public school districts and education service centers in Texas. As with the current Learn and Serve Texas grant, this competition will support service-learning within one or more school districts and will address the goals and objectives listed on the Service Learning Texas site.

Texas Healthy Habitats Grants

Service Learning Texas is pleased to announce a second round of funding for the Texas Healthy Habitats grants. This collaboration between Encana Oil & Gas (USA), Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and Service Learning Texas will again focus on involving students in environmental service-learning initiatives to improve or restore the natural environment. Eligible applicants include:

* Public schools, open enrollment charter schools, and private nonprofit schools that serve youth in grades 5-12;
* 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that work with students in grades 5-12; and
* State or local agencies that work with youth in grades 5-12.

Applicants must partner with TPWD staff for assistance in identifying local environmental needs, examining issues and determining resources, and developing a plan. Applicants may apply for up to $10,000. Competitive preference will be given to counties in which Encana operates (Angelina, Denton, Freestone, Hood, Leon, Nacogdoches, Panola, Parker, Robertson, Sabine, Shelby, Tarrant, and Wise). SLT anticipates awarding up to 7 grants for this competition.

MLK Challenge 2011 Out-of-Network Higher Education Grants

North Carolina Campus Compact, a national lead agency selected by the Corporation for National and Community Service to promote the 2011 MLK Day of Service, is now accepting applications from out-of-network institutions of higher education. Last year 36 institutions in 15 states, plus the District of Columbia, received $30,000 in out-of-network funds to support MLK Day.

Grants are available in increments of $1,000 and $2,500. Institutions in the following states are not eligible to apply for an out-of-network grant because the Campus Compact state office received an in-network grant: Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New York, Washington and West Virginia. Campuses in these states should contact the Campus Compact state office to determine eligibility to apply for a mini-grant.

Out-of-Network applications are accepted from institutions in any state not mentioned above. We strongly encourage applications on behalf of a group/coalition of institutions, but please note that only one institution can serve as the subgrantee.

Office Depot Foundation Grants

The Foundation's funding focus includes: Making a Difference in Children's Lives - to support activities that serve, teach and inspire children, youth and families; Building Communities - to support civic organizations and activities that serve the needs of our community; and Disaster Relief - to support disaster relief efforts of recognized national, regional and local agencies, and to provide disaster relief to Office Depot associates who have experienced catastrophic loss. An online eligibility survey and grant application can be found on the Grant Making Guidelines page. Applications are retrieved on a monthly basis and are reviewed by a committee. Please allow at least 12 weeks after you submit your completed application before you receive a response. Grant amounts will be a minimum of $50 and a maximum of $3,000 (very limited). Youth Garden Grants

Home Depot and the National Gardening Association (NGA) are partnering again to offer the Youth Garden Grants, given to schools and community organizations with child-centered garden programs. Priorities will be given to programs that emphasize one or more of these elements: educational focus or curricular/program integration, nutrition or plant-to-food connections, environmental awareness/education, entrepreneurship, social aspects of gardening such as leadership development, team building, community support, or service-learning. Schools, youth groups, community centers, camps, clubs, treatment facilities, and intergenerational groups throughout the United States are eligible. Applicants must plan to garden with at least 15 children between the ages of 3 and 18 years. Previous Youth Garden Grant winners who wish to reapply may do so, but must wait one year (e.g., if you won in 2010, you can apply again in 2012) and have significantly expanded their garden programs. This year, 100 grants are available, with five programs receiving gift cards valued at $1000 (a $500 gift card to Home Depot and a $500 gift card to the Gardening with Kids catalog, and educational materials from the National Gardening Association. Youth Change Maker Award

Operation REACH's Gulfsouth Youth Action Fund, a youth philanthropy initiative that engages youth as leaders and empowers them with the resources to make strategic investments in their peers and their communities, is seeking nominations for the 2010 Youth Change Maker Awards. These prestigious awards honor outstanding young people, ages 7 through 25, who have shown exemplary leadership in recovery, education, entrepreneurship and community service initiatives in the Gulfsouth region. Self-nominations are accepted. Finalists will be recognized and winners announced during the Youth Change Maker Awards Dinner on October 16, 2010 in New Orleans. Cities of Service Youth Service Institute Grants

Young people are critical assets for community change and helping mayors achieve their vision of a stronger community through service. Youth Service America (YSA) invites Cities of Service to engage youth volunteers through Global Youth Service Day and/or Semester of Service. To support Cities of Service in engaging youth, YSA is offering up to 30 Cities of Service $1,000 grants to cover registration, travel, and lodging for one staff member to attend its annual Youth Service Institute on October 13-15 in Detroit. In addition to this opportunity, applications from groups affiliated with a City of Service will receive preference for YSA's other grant programs throughout the year. Each grant engages participating youth in service-learning, an effective teaching and learning strategy that supports student learning, academic achievement, and workplace readiness. The grants encourage semester-long projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

Schools, service-learning coordinators, non-profits, and students in the health professions located in all 50 states and the District of Columbia are eligible to apply.

Applications must be submitted by midnight, October 22, 2010.

The fourth annual Youth Social Entrepreneurship Competition is sponsored by Ashoka’s Youth Venture® and Staples, in order to celebrate the stories of young changemakers around the world who are creating positive impact through their youth-led ventures.

Lead Agencies are local, regional, or statewide organizations across the United States, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, or New Brunswick that increase the scale, visibility, and impact of Global Youth Service Day by leading GYSD in their city, region, or state.

Lead Agency Responsibilities
Lead Agencies convene a planning coalition of at least 10 partner organizations that collectively engage at least 600 youth volunteers in service on GYSD, engage local media and elected officials, and plan a high profile signature project or celebration of service.

Lead Agency Benefits
Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, travel support to attend the Youth Service Institute, and ongoing training and technical assistance from Youth Service America to ensure a successful Global Youth Service Day.

AACC Invites Applicants For Service-Learning Workshop Mini-Grants

The American Association of Community Colleges has announced the availability of $2,000 mini-grants for community colleges interested in organizing and hosting regional workshops on service learning. Up to four colleges will be selected.

The workshops are made possible through AACC's national project, Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning, funded by the Learn and Serve America program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Each mini-grant recipient must agree to organize and host a workshop for the recipient college and at least four other community colleges between October 1, 2010, and May 31, 2011; focus on aspects of service learning that are specific to the community college experience; and feature plans or activities related to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (January 17, 2011). A $2,000 cash or in-kind match is required.

From Youth Service America (YSA). Funded by Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, STEMester of Service incorporates YSA’s semester-long service-learning framework to engage educators and students in addressing critical environmental needs and connecting them to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula, specifically science and technology.

YSA is seeking 10 middle schools with large populations of disadvantaged youth to join 20 returning STEMester of Service grantees. STEM schools must be located in one of the 12 states with highest dropout rates (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Washington).

The $5,000 grant (that includes travel and training at YSA’s Youth Service Institute in Detroit in October) supports teachers as they engage local partners and guide students in addressing local needs through planning and implementing sustainable service projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

We are pleased to announce a new cycle of funding for the Learn and Serve America: School-Based Program (LSA:SBP). Learn and Serve America provides opportunities for our country’s school-aged youth to serve their communities by integrating service into students’ formal academic experience. LSA:SBP is funded at the national level by the Corporation for National and Community Service, and is implemented by the New Jersey Department of State in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Education.

The LSA:SBP is, therefore, offering a two-year continuation grant to support the implementation of a LSA:SBP. This Notice of Grant Opportunity (NGO) is for the grant period of September 1, 2010 through August 31, 2011. This is the first year of a two-year continuation grant program.

Up to $14,000 will be awarded to a maximum of 15 programs for the first contract period totaling $210,000 statewide. All allocations are based on a thorough evaluation of each proposal and availability of federal funding from the Corporation on National and Community Service, which requires a dollar for dollar local cash and/or in-kind match for grants. The LSA:SBP grants, of up to $14,000, is open to all LEAs (including Charter Schools) but limited to those that have not received or have not successfully completed a LSA:SBP two year funding cycle during the 1996 to 2010 fiscal years. The Learn and Serve America Youth Engagement Zone (YEZ) program was newly authorized by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act. YEZ is designed to improve student engagement, including student attendance and behavior, and student achievement, graduation rates and college-going rates by:

1. Engaging youth as positive contributors through service-learning to demonstrate the relevance of academic coursework and the value of civic engagement to their educational and personal development; and

2. Connecting with citizens from diverse communities, backgrounds and perspectives to provide expanded opportunities to serve; and

3. Building enduring capacity within communities to become more effective at using service as a solution to address pressing challenges.

These grants will provide support for “eligible partnerships” to build on existing resources to develop coordinated school-based or community-based service-learning opportunities for secondary school students. All partnerships must include, at a minimum, at least one LEA, one community college, and one community-based entity.

Funding Available

In Fiscal Year 2010, there is approximately $5.4 million available for this program. The Corporation anticipates making an estimated 4 to 12 grant awards that will range from approximately $300,000 to $450,000 per year for up to three years. Funding beyond the first year for each grant award will be subject to the availability of future appropriations. We anticipate announcing the results of this competition in mid September 2010.

The Nonprofit Capacity Building Program (NCBP), a new program authorized by the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, will increase the capacity of a small number of intermediary grantees to work with small and midsize nonprofits in communities facing resource hardship challenges to develop and implement performance management systems.

Grantees will provide recipients with organizational development assistance to establish procedures for measuring progress and improving performance towards intended outcomes leading to community impact.

The Corporation expects that organizations funded will focus on implementing an organizational development assistance program that emphasizes the development and implementation of performance management systems that enable nonprofit recipients to measure their progress and improve their performance toward intended outcomes. The desired organizational performance management systems may also seek to align organizational goals and services with performance plans of staff and volunteers and be used to measure and reward performance toward specific outcomes. The applicant may also provide assistance in additional areas of best practices in nonprofit management tailored to the specific needs of individual nonprofit recipients.

In Fiscal Year 2010, there is $1 million available for the Nonprofit Capacity Building Program. The Corporation expects to award 1-5 grants ranging from approximately $200,000 to $1,000,000 under this Notice. We anticipate announcing the results of this competition by the end of September, 2010.

The Preserve America matching-grant program provides planning funding to designated Preserve America Communities to support preservation efforts through heritage tourism, education, and historic preservation planning. "I Am What I Learn" Video Contest

To further encourage student engagement, the U.S. Department of Education is launching the "I Am What I Learn" video contest. The Typical or Troubled? School Mental Health Education Grant Program provides funding to implement the Typical or Troubled? School Mental Health educational model in communities across the United States. Typical or Troubled? is an educational program designed to help school personnel (teachers, coaches guidance counselors, etc.) raise their awareness of mental disorders in teens. The program focuses on promoting the importance of early recognition and treatment, recognizing the early warning signs of mental health problems, and encouraging action and appropriate referral to a mental health professional.

Are private schools eligible?
Private schools, colleges, governmental organizations and non-profit organizations are all eligible for funding to the extent that they collaborate with and engage K-12 public school curriculum and achievement as part of the grant.

Who is eligible to receive a grant?
All non-profit, tax-exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code are eligible as well as Canadian charitable organizations, educational institutions, and governmental entities.

Can a grant address more than one issue area?
Grants can and often do address more than one of our issue areas. When submitting a grant, it is important that you identify the area that your grant best identifies with. Use the narratives within your application to explain how your grant will address multiple issue areas, but when your grant is submitted it has to be reviewed under one main heading.

Can our organization apply for more than one grant?
Yes, there is no limit to the number of submissions that an organization can make. It is unlikely that our board would select an organization for more than one grant, so your time is best spent focusing on one grant. But, to the extent that you'd like to submit multiple grants, feel free.

2008-2009 Service-Learning Extension Grant

Any Missouri school district or charter school is eligible.

The National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993 created a new federal agency known as the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Corporation’s purpose is to provide funds, training, and assistance to states in order to develop and expand service opportunities for young people. A portion of this national legislation created the Learn and Serve America Program for state departments of education to fund local schools that wish to implement service-learning. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has received federal dollars from the Corporation for National and Community Service in order to administer the Learn and Serve Missouri Grants Program.

Focus Areas:

Applicants must incorporate at least one of the following focus areas into their service-learning program. The applicant can also include other community needs it wishes to address.

• Development of a program which include at-risk students/students with special needs/disabilities into a service-learning program.
• Development of an alcohol and/or drug abuse prevention and/or intervention program to reduce the number of alcohol/drug related offenses in the school district.
• Development of an anti-violence/anti-bullying program to reduce the number of bullying or violent offenses between students.

Program Objectives:
Applicants must fall within one of the following program objects in their proposed service-
learning program:

• Projects shall be consistent with the K-12 Standards for Quality Service-Learning Practice;
• Projects shall align service-learning activities with the Show-Me Standards;
• Projects shall meet a real community need determined through a community needs assessment;
• Projects shall show youth participants involved in decision making at some level;
• Projects shall further the development of school partnerships with the community;
• Projects shall encourage the involvement and training of classroom teachers in the planning of service-learning or implementing it into their classroom or school;

NC Campus Compact, a national lead agency selected by the Corporation for National and Community Service to promote the 2010 MLK Day of Service, is now accepting applications from out-of-network institutions of higher education. . Last year we awarded $25,000 in out-of-network funds to 28 institutions who mobilized 5800 volunteers on the 2009 MLK Day of Service.

Grants are available in increments of $1,000 and $2,500. Institutions in the following states are not eligible to apply for an out-of-network grant because the Campus Compact state office applied for an in-network grant: Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Contingent upon federal funding, the YESS program will engage young people in service-learning activities that address local needs in order to build healthy communities. The YESS program will strengthen ties between schools, families and communities through service-learning and the use of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curriculum to promote healthy personal environments, family/school environments and community environments.

It is the goal of the IGESL, through the YESS program, to encourage students to cultivate resilience and developmental assets while developing workplace-readiness skills, exploring career options, demonstrating active citizenship and giving back to their community through service-learning.

Schools interested in pursuing this opportunity must convene a project team of four faculty members including a minimum of one administrator and teachers from at least two STEM disciplines. Youth Service America is pleased to launch the first annual Gladys Marinelli Coccia Awards to recognize two young female social entrepreneurs, ages 14 to 17, whose initiatives serve the common good. The awards are created in memory of Gladys Coccia, who began her entrepreneurial career when she was a young girl in West Virginia and later became a very successful businesswoman in Washington, DC. Nominations from across the country are welcome; special consideration will be given to nominees from West Virginia and metropolitan Washington, DC. Self-nominations are accepted. The deadline to begin an online nomination is June 15. After this date, nominations cannot be initiated. The deadline to complete a nomination is June 30. About Mrs. Coccia

The award program is created in honor of Mrs. Gladys Marinelli Coccia - a business woman and entrepreneur since she was 15 years old until she passed away in 2007, at the age of 93. The grandmother of YSA Board Member Brian Murrow, Gladys grew up in southern West Virginia and moved to the Washington DC area in 1961 where she was well-known in the Italian American business community as the owner and operator of Marinelli's Delicatessen, which she established in 1962 and managed for the subsequent 30 years.

Eligibility

Social entrepreneurs apply business practices to achieve positive social change and measure their success through their social impact. They find innovative and sustainable ways to address pressing issues. Ambitious and persistent, they grapple with important causes and offer new alternatives that enhance the community. Social entrepreneurs change the system, spread solutions, and persuade others to change their actions. With a sound application of business principles, social entrepreneurs have a sustainable impact on their community: their influence contributes to a healthy, productive, meaningful life for others, both present and future.

Girls who meet the following criteria are eligible for the award:

Between the ages of 14 and 17 on December 31, 2009.
Located in the United States. Special consideration will be given to nominees located in West Virginia and Metro Washington DC.
Have her own social enterprise.
Be supported by contributions of at least $1000 (cash and/or in-kind).
Have a business plan, including an itemized budget

Supporting Materials

Please include two letters of reference with the nomination. Letters may be written by anyone who knows the nominee (outside of her family), and should include a brief description of nominee’s relationship to writer and how the applicant demonstrates exemplary action for social and structural change. Letters should not exceed one 8½ x 11-inch typed sheet of paper and should include the writer’s contact information and signature. Letters of recommendation must be submitted with the nomination. The nominator may submit no more than three additional items as supporting materials that demonstrate the nominee’s achievement(s). This can include testimonial letters, press clippings or references to stories broadcast on TV/Radio, etc. Materials must be in electronic format and uploaded as part of the nomination. STEMester of Service Grants

Contingent on federal funding, Youth Service America (YSA) will implement a program to support middle school science teachers and service-learning coordinators to strengthen their classroom practices through service-learning, a teaching method that combines meaningful service with curriculum or program-based learning. The grant targets students from disadvantaged circumstances in states with the highest drop out rates in the nation (Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Washington).

STEMester of Service engages middle school youth in science and technology-focused service-learning projects that address community problems. Research shows that service-learning connects students to their schools and communities while improving academic achievement. Semester-long service-learning opportunities incorporate youth voice and opportunities for reflection, are connected to educational standards, and demonstrate community impact. With training and preparation occurring in the fall for grantees, school programs will launch on Martin Luther King Day, January 18, 2010, and culminate on Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25, 2010.

The program components include:

Annual competitive $5,000 grant for teachers or service-learning coordinators. ($1,000 of the grant will be applied toward travel for professional development.)
Additional $500 to subsidize a stipend for an “ally” located in each school who will support the grantee and help to establish a more sustainable program at their school.
Training and professional development, including participation at YSA’s Youth Service Institute in Washington, D.C, October 2009.
Resources such as curriculum guides and project ideas aligned to academic standards to help grantees plan and implement STEMemester of Service.
Technical assistance and personalized online support from YSA.
National recognition and visibility through YSA communications and outreach initiatives.

Grantees will engage up to 75 six through eighth-graders in a semester-long service-learning program. With a focus on environmental concerns, STEMester of Service’s goals include addressing community problems, encouraging students to explore STEM careers, and preventing early dropout. Environmental issues addressed can include green space availability, health effects, climate change, and disaster management. The projects should provide students with opportunities to use technology to deepen and demonstrate their learning.

Teachers, administrators and service-learning coordinators in middle schools
Staff and service-learning coordinators in afterschool programs

Free Scholarships Available to National Alternative Break Training

Break Away – the national nonprofit which works with college students and staff who run alternative break programs – is offering scholarships to attend the 2009 Blacksburg, Virginia Alternative Break Citizenship Schools June 13-19, 2009. The scholarships have been made available by the Starbucks Foundation, which is interested in helping to build sustainable and student-led alternative break programs on campus. If you are building a program or are in your first 5 years of running an alternative break program, you are welcome to apply.

2009 Help America Vote Act Mock Election Program

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) announces the availability of $300,000 in grant funds for the first year of a two-year award to organize and administer mock elections for High School students.

EAC will fund proposals that launch new mock election initiatives or substantively build upon existing mock election programs. The purpose of the program is to allow students to become more familiar with voting processes and technologies so that when they become eligible to vote they will be more comfortable with their civic duties. EAC is particularly interested in funding opportunities that promote the use of voting machines through partnerships with local election officials.

Project funds must be used for tasks and activities that are carried out without partisan bias and without promoting any particular political point of view regarding any election issue or candidate.

The $300,000 will be available to between approximately 4 and 10 organizations.
Proposals should include a two-year project plan and budget which proposes holding mock elections for both the 2009 and 2010 election cycles. Applicants may propose planning and scaled-down activities for the 2009 election cycle in preparation for larger initiatives for the 2010 election that will be supported using money from the first year of the grant.

Additional funding to expand 2010 activities in the second year of the grant will be provided subject to availability of appropriated funds in FY 2010 and substantial progress towards approved performance measures.

This assistance is being offered by the Omnibus Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2009 (Public Law 111-8), which provides funds for EAC to award competitive grants for operating a program of simulated elections for students in secondary education programs.

These grants will be administered under the Office of Management and Budget uniform administrative requirements and cost principles applicable to the organization that receives the assistance.

For two reasons, learning in the arts is an indispensable part of American education: 1) children celebrate and participate in their cultural inheritance, and 2) academic and social maturity follow directly from arts education experiences.

The Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth category offers funding for projects that help children and youth acquire knowledge and understanding of and skills in the arts. Projects must provide participatory learning and engage students with skilled artists, teachers, and excellent art. Funded projects apply national or state arts education standards. All projects submitted to the Learning in the Arts category must include:

Experience: Students and their teachers will have the chance to experience exemplary works of art -- in live form where possible.
Study: Through the guidance of teachers, teaching artists, and cultural organizations, students will study works of art in order to understand the cultural and social context from which they come, and to appreciate the technical and/or aesthetic qualities of each work. Where appropriate, study will include the acquisition of skills relevant to practicing the art form.
Performance: Informed by their experience and study, students will create artwork. In the case of literature, the primary creative activities will be writing and/or recitation.
Assessment: Students will be assessed according to national or state arts education standards. Where appropriate, projects will employ multiple forms of assessment including pre- and post-testing.

Scholarships for New England Schools/Districts

We define service-learning as a teaching strategy through which K-12 students identify, research and address real community challenges, using knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

The basic objectives of the day are to help faculty members:

* understand the difference between the KIDS model of service-learning and other community-oriented educational experiences
* understand the importance of community partners
* learn about a variety of service-learning projects and see the benefits of service-learning
* learn the steps in a KIDS service-learning project

KIDS Education Consultants will work closely with selected applicants to tailor the day to meet local needs. We invite applicants to propose their ideas for how to best use the day.

* One option may be to offer a brief overview training for all staff in the morning and then a more in-depth session for selected faculty later in the day.
* Another option might be to offer two half-day sessions at different schools in the district (i.e. one session at an elementary school in the morning and the same session in the afternoon at the middle school).

KIDS Consortium will provide materials and a facilitator. Depending on the applicants request (e.g. number of people to be trained and depth of training), we will offer FREE of charge, a limited number of our award winning KIDS as Planners Guidebook. It may be advantageous to consider purchasing additional guidebooks.

Participating schools and districts are asked to provide appropriate space for the training, snacks/meals as needed, and to cover any expenses related to substitute teachers or other stipends for faculty.

Wisconsin's Service-Learning Program Grants

High quality service-learning practice does not happen by accident, nor does it happen in isolation. Wisconsin takes a systems approach to the process, grounding implementation solidly in the K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice.

Over the next three years, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI) will leverage funding to develop the necessary support and infrastructure to result in sustainable, high quality service-learning practice in teaching STEM and creativity concepts and skills.

The following components will impact retention and graduation rates and have the potential to reach every student in the state:

1. Funding that specifically addresses support for ongoing professional development and teacher mentoring. A cascade model of professional development will provide ongoing skill development, exemplar curricular models, mentoring, and implementation that fosters continuous improvement. This work will be grounded in the STEM disciplines, focusing on utilizing service-learning as a core instructional methodology to teach 21st century skills across the curriculum.
2. An emphasis on increased support and policy development to advance service-learning.
3. Funding for districts to institutionalize service-learning throughout the educational experience. Leadership institutes will be provided that assist districts in simultaneously adopting the five critical components for institutionalization: Vision and leadership; curriculum and assessment; community-school partnerships; professional development; and continuous improvement.

DPI Administers Service-Learning Grants
Each year the DPI receives a Learn and Serve America (LSA) grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service to support school-based service-learning programs. The current focus of the Learn and Serve grant is to support ongoing professional development and establish an infrastructure to nurture the practice of high quality service-learning as an instructional methodology in teaching STEM and creativity concepts and skills.

Grant awards of up to $20,000 to local education agency partnerships or a consortium of LEAs to support the implementation and institutionalization of programs that advance service-learning as an effective pedagogy in teaching STEM and creativity. This year, $118,172 is available to support applications to create a lasting service-learning culture in Wisconsin schools.

As part of an ongoing effort to improve the theory and practice informing collegiate service-learning and community engagement in the state of Florida, Florida Campus Compact invites research proposals from engaged scholars at our member campuses through this new fellows program. Researchers from all disciplines are invited to apply.

Up to five Florida scholars will be chosen by a panel of qualified reviewers to receive this distinction. Fellows will have the opportunity to be part of an active community of scholars who will meet quarterly (either virtually or in person) to discuss strategies for research design and dissemination. Each scholar will receive a small amount of financial support for her or his research and will be invited to submit an article for publication in a special peer-reviewed volume of Florida Engaged Scholarship to be published in 2011.

At least three of the five scholars selected will be tenure-earning. Projects focusing on community impacts of collegiate service-learning and community engagement will be favored. Interested researchers should complete the attached application and must include a project budget not to exceed $2500, with no more than $2000 to be spent on a faculty stipend. Funds will be available for distribution beginning July 15, 2009, and all deliverables will be due June 15, 2010. Deliverables will include a copy of a 25-30 page article on the research outcomes that may be submitted to our Florida publication or another appropriate forum, a short report/précis on the project based on an FL|CC template for inclusion in promotional materials, and an updated CV for the fellowship recipient that can be used in promotional materials.

Participants will also be invited to present research at FL|CC events and may be invited to provide informal mentoring for emerging researchers in the state.

Electricity provider First Choice Power is accepting online applications for its Classroom Energy Innovation Grants. First Choice Power will award grants to inventive teachers across Texas working to stimulate and inspire young minds with innovative classroom projects on energy and energy efficiency.

Full-time Texas K-12 teachers and pre-K teachers with an early childhood license in communities served by First Choice Power are eligible to apply.

That's a staggering statistic we want to help change.

Here's our challenge to students in grades 9 through 12 and their teachers or advisors: Work together to develop a campaign to address the issue of teen driver safety in your community.

How you choose to do that is completely up to you! With any service-learning project, the goal is to make an impact in your community in the most creative way possible. The only limit is your imagination.

Each year, schools whose campaigns are judged to be among the top 10 in the nation receive $5,000 to help cover expenses to come to The National Service-Learning Conference. There, they showcase their great work, one campaign is named the Best of the Best and that team presented with a $10,000 grant to continue its teen driver safety efforts.
