Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge

Deadline: January 31 for Elementary Schools; March 15 for Middle Schools

The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge gives students the opportunity, tools and inspiration to become those agents of change. Beginning August 19, 2009 through March 15, 2010, middle school student teams from across the country will be challenged to create sustainable, reproducible environmental improvements in their local communities. CNCS AmeriCorps Grants

Subject to the availability of appropriations for fiscal year 2010, the Corporation announces the anticipated availability of approximately $363 million to award new, re-competing, and continuation AmeriCorps State and National grants. The grant categories are: State Commission and National Competitive including Professional Corps and Fixed-Amount Grants; State and National EAP; States and Territories without Commissions; and Indian Tribes. CVS Caremark Community Grants

The CVS Caremark Community Grants program awards funds to nonprofit organizations for programs targeting children with disabilities; programs focusing on health and rehabilitation services; and public schools promoting a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs, and initiatives that give greater access to physical movement and play. Qualifying organizations are eligible for grants of up to $5,000.

Regional Texas Funding Opportunity

The TJX Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in the communities
where TJX Companies, Inc. divisions operate stores, including locations
in every U.S. state except Alaska and Hawaii. (The company also has
operations in Puerto Rico, Canada, and Europe.) The Foundation's primary
focus is on programs that provide basic needs services to disadvantaged

"I Am What I Learn" Video Contest

Deadline: November 2

To further encourage student engagement, the U.S. Department of Education is launching the "I Am What I Learn" video contest. The Department is asking students to respond to the President's challenge by creating videos, up to two minutes in length, describing the steps they will take to improve their education and the role education will play in fulfilling their dreams.

Please encourage all students age 13 and older to create and upload their videos to YouTube by October 8. Submissions can be in the form of video blogs, public service announcements (PSAs), music videos, or documentaries. Students are encouraged to have fun and be creative with this project! The general public will then vote on their favorites to determine the top 20 finalists. These 20 videos will be reviewed by a panel of judges including U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. The panel will choose three winners, each of whom will receive a $1,000 cash prize.

American Psychiatric Foundation Offers Grants for High Schools to Implement Mental Health Educational Model

Deadline: October 30

The Typical or Troubled? School Mental Health Education Grant Program provides funding to implement the Typical or Troubled? School Mental Health educational model in communities across the United States. Community organizations, high schools, and school districts are eligible to receive funding and training materials to implement the program.

Typical or Troubled? is an educational program designed to help school personnel (teachers, coaches guidance counselors, etc.) raise their awareness of mental disorders in teens. The program focuses on promoting the importance of early recognition and treatment, recognizing the early warning signs of mental health problems, and encouraging action and appropriate referral to a mental health professional.

For program implementation at two to four high schools, a grant in the amount of $1,500 will be awarded; for implementation at five or more high schools, a grant in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded. Program education and training materials will be made available for the grant recipient's use.

The Toolbox for Education Grant Program

Deadline: October 16

Offered by Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation, these grants provide up to $5,000 to K-12 public schools and 501(c)(3) parent-teacher groups associated with public schools that develop projects that encourage parent involvement and build stronger community spirit. Lowe's will donate a total of $5 million to more than 1,000 different schools throughout the U.S. during the 2009-2010 school year. Preference is given to funding requests which have a permanent impact such as facility enhancement or landscaping/clean-up projects. In addition, for this school year basic needs requests will take priority in order to provide the tools that
help educators and parent groups through these challenging times. The upcoming application deadlines are October 16, 2009, and February 12, 2010.

HEROES Grants Support Youth-Led Innovative Solutions to Childhood Obesity

Educators, service-learning coordinators, and students in the health professions are eligible to apply for the UnitedHealth HEROES service-learning project grants. Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that combines meaningful service to the community with school-based curriculum or program-based learning.

Grant recipients will receive up to $1,000 in support for service-learning projects that focus on childhood obesity, engage youth ages 5-25 in the planning and implementation process, and take place during Semester of Service 2010 (MLK Day, January 18, to Global Youth Service Day, April 23-25).
