AmeriCorps Alums 5th Annual Eli Segal Entrepreneurship Award

Eli Segal served as the first CEO of the Corporation for National Service and under his leadership AmeriCorps was born. Eli Segal loved to get things done. His unique combination of optimism, vision and practicality resulted in ambitious and creative programs that have made a real difference in our country.

Eli’s passion for citizen engagement has been brought to life in communities across the country every day in the youthful energy and talent of more than 600,000 young people who have served in AmeriCorps. Through Mr. Segal’s, vision, perseverance, commitment and entrepreneurial spirit, National Service has become deeply embedded within our culture.

Eli Segal started the AmeriCorps Alums Entrepreneurship Award during his life to recognize alumni with similar promise. To honor Eli’s life and to build upon his legacy, AmeriCorps Alums awards one alumnus each year who has demonstrated an outstanding entrepreneurial commitment to service beyond their term with AmeriCorps. Along with recognition among peers, in the media and our online networks, the award entails a valuable prize cash prize of $5,000 and in-person recognition at an award ceremony.

New Funding Opportunity for Federal Work-Study Community Service from the Department of Education

Dates: Applications Available: July 9, 2010.
Deadline for Transmittal of Applications: August 9, 2010.

The Department of Education is seeking applications to provide grants to institutions of higher education (IHEs) participating in the Federal Work-Study to recruit and compensate students (including compensation for time spent in training and for travel) for part-time, off-campus employment directly related to community service.  The funds granted to an IHE under this program may only be used to make payments to students participating in work-study programs.

There are two competitive priorities for this funding:

Competitive Preference Priority 1: The Secretary-gives priority to applications that propose projects that support postsecondary students assisting with early childhood education activities.

Competitive Preference Priority 2: The Secretary gives priority to applications that propose projects that support students assisting with activities in preparation for emergencies and natural disasters.

The Staples Youth Social Entrepreneurship Competition

The fourth annual Youth Social Entrepreneurship Competition is sponsored by Ashoka’s Youth Venture® and Staples, in order to celebrate the stories of young changemakers around the world who are creating positive impact through their youth-led ventures.

The global competition is open to young people between the ages of 12 and 24 who have launched their own youth-led ventures. We’re looking for amazing youth to share how their work demonstrates exceptionally inspirational changemaking, particularly in areas of empathy, teamwork, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Nominations and entries will be accepted on a rolling basis through Sept. 20, 2010. Eight winners will be chosen throughout the summer, and in October, the grand-prize winner will be selected for their outstanding impact, innovation and potential. All eight winners will be recognized at a TEDx conference, a national gathering of thought leaders devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading," on Nov. 13, 2010 in Washington, DC.

During the TEDxYSE conference, the grand-prize winning team will be announced and presented with the Staples/Ashoka Youth Social Entrepreneurship Excellence Award and a prize worth $5,000. The seven remaining winners will receive Achievement Awards and prizes worth $500. The grand-prize winning team will have the unique opportunity to consult with, and draw from the expertise of high-level Staples executives. All eight winning teams will get the opportunity to meet with an Ashoka Fellow - one of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. Ashoka Fellows are known for their unrivaled commitment to bold ideas and innovative solutions.

Apply to be a 2011 Global Youth Service Day Lead Agency

Global Youth Service Day takes place April 15-17, 2011.

Lead Agencies are local, regional, or statewide organizations across the United States, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, or New Brunswick that increase the scale, visibility, and impact of Global Youth Service Day by leading GYSD in their city, region, or state.

Lead Agency Responsibilities
Lead Agencies convene a planning coalition of at least 10 partner organizations that collectively engage at least 600 youth volunteers in service on GYSD, engage local media and elected officials, and plan a high profile signature project or celebration of service.

Lead Agency Benefits
Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, travel support to attend the Youth Service Institute, and ongoing training and technical assistance from Youth Service America to ensure a successful Global Youth Service Day.

Past Lead Agencies have leveraged their position as a GYSD Lead Agency to strengthen their programs, form new partnerships, expand their volunteer base, garner media attention, gain support from local public officials, and secure additional funding.

AACC Invites Applicants For Service-Learning Workshop Mini-Grants

The American Association of Community Colleges has announced the availability of $2,000 mini-grants for community colleges interested in organizing and hosting regional workshops on service learning. Up to four colleges will be selected.

The workshops are made possible through AACC's national project, Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning, funded by the Learn and Serve America program of the Corporation for National and Community Service.

Each mini-grant recipient must agree to organize and host a workshop for the recipient college and at least four other community colleges between October 1, 2010, and May 31, 2011; focus on aspects of service learning that are specific to the community college experience; and feature plans or activities related to the Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (January 17, 2011). A $2,000 cash or in-kind match is required.
